So, last month I talked about creating a regular creative practice for yourself. Wondering how it unfolded for you?
I decided to do something daily. Drawing materials were more portable
then collage for me so I drew each day for a few moments. Wonderfully
colorful, interesting patterns emerged. I so enjoy my drawing time.
This Month’s Inquiry
This month I would like to offer "clearing" your creative space as the inquiry. Clearing your creative space can happen on different levels depending on where you are at and what’s happening for you.
This month’s inquiry is "what happens when you clear your creative space?"
Art-Making Inquiry
At one level, it can be physical. Clearing the space you create in -
throwing things out, reorganizing things, cleaning things, letting go
of old projects and supplies, creating more physical space to work in,
adding more light, a mirror, another table surface, an empty wall and
many more things.
If you feel stuck in this area, get some support and help with it. Ask
a friend to work with you. Support yourself and your growing awareness
by bringing your experience into your art-making to see clearly and let
things move. How is your experience? Collage it. Write in your journal and let things move.
An example might be, "it seems overwhelming, there’s too much" or
"everything is precious and cannot be wasted". There are hundreds of
limiting beliefs that invade our create process and space and prevent
us from being free to create. Work with both the physical
and internal space as needed to clear your space.
At another level, the clearing can be internal, energetic and then the
physical space often opens up. Clearing the internal space of afflictive
emotions and painful, unconstructive mind states is the task. The
Buddha in his understanding of suffering shared that we suffer from
greed, hatred and delusion. Greed being a desire for pleasure and a
wanting of things to stay as they are forever. Hatred being aversion,
pushing away, resisting and a sense of hopelessness. Delusion being a
belief that when something or everything gets better then one will be
happy.
Look closely at your creative process and internal space to notice
where these afflictions are in play. What are you attached to? What are
you avoiding? What are you holding out for – when x happens then
creativity, happiness, contentment, joy? Collage what you notice. Write in your journal and let things move.
I use collage above as an art process example and you can choose any expressive arts
modality – drawing, writing, dancing, sewing, sculpting, whatever works for
you and your creative process.
Have a great month. Please share if you feel inspired to do so. I love hearing from you.

Have
a great month and live in the remembrance that in all of time, there will only be one you. Your greatest gift to yourself and the world is the expression of your authentic self. By using art-making to connect deeply with yourself, may you find the courage and strength to share your beautiful, joyous self with the world.
